About the Instructors

Our instructors have real-world experience that they bring into the classroom.  They go beyond the curriculum by including relevant tips and skills that they have gained through their years of service in law enforcement.  As experienced instructors they use a combination of lecture as well as the practical experience of case studies to help convey the course material.  The following instructors have completed an Instructor Development Course and are APOST certified.

Dr. Lou Harris
Dr. Harris is the Chair of the Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Department at Faulkner University.  He holds a Doctorate of Public Administration from the University of Alabama and a MS Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University Montgomery.  Dr. Harris is a Certified APOST Instructor and is retired from the FBI and served in the Navy.  He serves as a Board Member on the Alabama Sentencing Commission, Montgomery Chapter of CrimeStoppers, Governor’s Task Force on Prison Overcrowding and Montgomery Chapter of ASIS.

Phillip Calvert
Mr. Calvert serves as BCJ Director of the Criminal Justice/Legal Studies Department at Faulkner University and as an Adjunct Instructor for the Faulkner University Criminal Justice Program.  He has served as former Accounting Director for the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and is retired as an Alabama ABC Enforcement Captain.  Mr. Calvert holds a BS Degree in Management of Human Resources and a MS Degree with additional completion of Criminal Justice courses.  He graduated from FBI National Academy and has 26+ years of law enforcement experience.  He is a Certified APOST Instructor and was the founder and administrator of AlaCop.us.  He has served as Alabama Representative & Proxy to the Board of Directors for ROCIC and as Secretary/Treasurer for the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association.  He has also served as Sergeant-at-Arms for the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association and is a former adjunct instructor at Troy University.

Robert T. Thetford
Mr. Thetford has over twenty-five years of experience as a FBI Prosecutor, Special Agent and Division Legal Counsel.  He is also a member of the Alabama Bar and has provided legal advice and instruction for a variety of federal/state agencies.  During his career he has investigated political corruption, white collar crime, and terrorism cases.  Mr. Thetford is a Certified Police Instructor, Legal Instructor, Government Mediator, and Field Relief Supervisor for 10+ years.  He currently serves as MJA Director and Professor of Criminal Justice at Faulkner University and has served as an instructor with the Alabama Department of Public Safety as well as a guest lecturer at the U.S. Air War College.  Mr. Thetford practices law specializing in mediation procedures and consulting for police agencies and private industry.  He serves as an elder and Sunday Scholl teacher in his Church and as a Certified Christian Conciliator, providing biblically-based mediation services and training.

John Mulligan
Mr. Mulligan has 40 years of law enforcement experience in the FBI and in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.  He has conducted investigations of organized crime, public corruption and white-collar crime and judicial inquiries.  He has served as a police instructor, Field Relief Supervisor and Assessor in the FBI New Agent Selection System.  He holds a BA Degree in Criminology from the University of Maryland and he is a Certified Fraud Examiner.  Mr. Mulligan operated his own private consulting business.  He has conducted training in the use of computer databases in the Attorney General’s Office.  He serves as a regular presenter for the Center for Government Services, Auburn University and is commissioned as a lay minister- Toolen Institute of Parish Services, Archdiocese of Mobile.

Jim Rechel
Mr. Rechel is the President of The Rechel Group, Inc. and is a Certified Financial Security Officer.  He is a retired FBI Agent and is a past Board Member of the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators.  He has also served as a Board Member for the American Society of Industrial Security and is the former Vice-President for Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati, OH.  Mr. Rechel holds a BA Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati and is a graduate from the FBI Academy.  He has served as a Special Agent with the FBI in Selma, Alabama, for three years and has 15+ years’ experience training more than 1000 professional organizations and more than 75,000 individuals.  His work has been nationally recognized in CEO Magazine, Cincinnati Enquirer, USA Today, and CNBC.

Stan Tippins 
Mr. Tippins is a Professor for the Criminal Justice Department at Faulkner University and a former Criminal Investigator with the State of Alabama Medicaid Agency/Fraud Investigation Unit.  He has 16+ years of law enforcement experience and as served as an Adjunct Instructor at Central Alabama Community College.  He is a graduate of the ICJE Instructor Development Course and he holds BS and MS Degrees with Specializations in Criminal Justice.  His experience includes being an instructor of Rape Awareness and Prevention for the Business Women of America and Chief Instructor and founder of Creative Defense Systems as well as State Representative for Filipino Combat Systems (FCSKali).
